Pelican Chapter, ABC Training, in conjunction with NCCER guidelines, hosted an informational and interactive field trip for students on October 25, October 26, and October 27. NCCER has designated October as Careers in Construction Month. The goal of this is not only to promote construction as a rewarding career, but to encourage industry associations, contractors and schools to forge partnerships locally to enhance workforce development efforts. Governor Joh Bel Edwards and his staff have acknowledged the importance of the construction industry to our local economy and infrastructure and have written a proclamation for the state of Louisiana to recognize and emphasize the importance of this industry for our great state.
Upon arrival, students were divided into groups to make it easier to rotate through the craft stations. Each day began with a welcome and overview of the Pelican Chapter, ABC Training, a NCCER Build Your Future video, and a guest speaker from the construction industry. Students visited stations that centered on many of today’s most competitive, labor-oriented jobs. Students rotated through 6 stations involving carpentry, electrical and instrumentation, heavy equipment, pipefitting, millwright, and welding. Each station was manned by a journeyman in the craft area. The journeyman gave students a basic understanding of their craft along with the training necessary. They also discussed the rewards and career paths available.
The administration and staff of LHS pride their work on preparing students with the necessary skills to enter the workforce upon graduation. Livonia High School is committed to providing a safe learning environment where students achieve academic success and become productive contributors of a diverse community.
