The students enrolled in welding classes at Livonia High School are familiar with fabricating iron. The students thrive by seeing a “product” as the end result of their daily tasks and activities. Instructor Randy Jarreau starts the process by having the team of workers design a product with a simple sketch before having a feasibility study. Once the students report back to their instructor, they make any necessary adjustments to the blueprints and then proceed to planning the materials list and work schedule. Fausto Mejia and Victor Torres recently took their classroom instruction to the next level and designed two props for the school’s Homecoming dances. The boys worked with a variety of materials and supplies to produce a fantastic design of the facade of the house from the Wizard of Oz that was used in the “No Place Like Home” themed Homecoming events.

The hands-on training and opportunities to provide real world applications of the lessons acquired in the classroom are bountiful in the Welding Department. Students plan, construct, and evaluate their designs and show great creativity as well as workmanship while fabricating. Welding Instructor Randy Jarreau enjoys observing the methods used by the students when they encounter any logistical issues. As a facilitator, he monitors their ideas and encourages them to think of multiple ways to solve the problems they encounter.
